Background:

I started in 3D in 1999, shortly after buying my first PC. Through game modding I gained good experience in building and texturing meshes to suit a game platform, but the constraints over such models are very limiting and you have to be exceptional to do well in this area. I think I did well given the constraints of Homeworld, but to really understand the finer points of modeling you have to go high poly. I started with LightWave as it seems perfect for the hobbyist modeler. A great skills set with the best renderer out of the box on the market.

I've been working with LightWave for about 4 years now, and each model I produce feels better than the last. I'm really a hard body modeler, and being interested in sci-fi has pulled me towards making clone models of familiar craft from a variety of SF shows. I'd like to move more into soft body modeling in the future, and I'm always looking for objects to model.

3D Modeler:

I'm primarily a LightWave artist at the moment, although I'm looking for the motivation to branch out into other 3D applications. Maya seems to be the FX industry standard at the moment due to it's excellent animation capabilities. Film / TV CGI work is where I'd ideally want to work if I decide to move into the industry. At the moment I'm reading a lot about work and conditions in the CG world, and it's not the most pleasant I've heard - but the work still may just bring me in!

Painting & Decorating:

I use Paint Shop Pro for all my texturing needs. While not being as comprehensive as Photoshop in some areas, it is easily capable of matching it with the right person running it.

Programming:

I mainly code in Visual Basic. It's quick, easy and flexible. For the kind of programming I do it's perfect, and I haven't seen the need to migrate over to the .NET platform yet, although I know I'll have to one day.

Other:

I'm quite keen about learning new applications. Almost anything increases my skills set so I tend to move around and try everything. This website is one of my first moves into web design. I'm sure version 2 will be better :)
